Wolfgang Candy, one of America’s oldest family-owned chocolate companies, is seeking contestants to participate in an eating contest at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28 at Central Market House, 34 W. Philadelphia St in downtown York.

The second annual Chocolate Bunny Challenge - the only eating contest of its kind in the United States - will feature a panel of hand-selected challengers to face last year’s champion, Don Yeager of Harrisburg.

During the 2014 contest, held at Wolfgang’s retail store, Yeager, 30, consumed the 1.25-pound hollow bunny in about nine minutes.

To apply, visit www.wolfgangcandy.com/bunnychallenge through March 13. Contestants will be notified of their selection by March 16. Prospective eaters must be over the age of 18 and able to travel to Central Market York, at their own expense, the day of the contest.

The winning contestant will receive a $100 cash prize, bragging rights and the coveted Chocolate Bunny Challenge trophy.

The event will also feature giveaways for spectators and a special sale of Wolfgang candy items.

“Everyone knows that the chocolate bunny is the best part of the Easter basket,” said event emcee Philip Given. “Last year’s challenge was a fast and furious feast and I’m excited to get the challenge hopping this year.”

“Due to the popularity of last year’s challenge, we decided to move the event to a bigger, better venue this year,” said Chief Executive Officer Benjamin McGlaughlin. “Central Market York seemed like the perfect place to gather the community and kick off the Easter season.”

Wolfgang Candy, which once operated a stand in the historic market, began manufacturing chocolate bunnies in the early 1920s using a mold-spinning machine, which turns and rotates until chocolate has completely covered the outside of the mold.

Crafted from Wolfgang Candy’s premium chocolate, the bunnies are available for purchase at www.wolfgangcandy.com/shop or at Wolfgang’s Das Sweeten Haus retail store at 50 E. 4th Ave. in North York.
